Note: From August 4 to September 29, Nabil Gayed, MD, a general surgeon from Huntington, Indiana is delivering education, training and direct care at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre.
Dr. Nabil Gayed has settled into his new surroundings in Blantyre, Malawi and has wasted no time getting to work with the Surgical Intern Training Program (SITP) at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital. Dr. Gayed is very excited to partake in the SITP, which is aimed at strengthening the education and training of interns, residents, and clinical officers in Malawi. Dr. Gayed will serve as an attending physician, participate in curriculum development and implementation, and assist with the general surgery caseload at the hospital. Dr. Gayed will be the first visiting surgeon to teach on and utilizing the newly donated Universal Anesthesia Machine to meet a tremendous need for enhanced anesthesia capabilities for pediatric surgery.
Dr. Gayed is already working with several interns and has held surgical skills training in the surgery lab. He and the trainees have evaluated 57 patients and operated on 22 suffering from a range of conditions.
