January 12, 2010, an unforgettable date to all of those who live in Haiti.  On that day at 16:53 local time, an earthquake with a devastating magnitude of 7.0 occurred.  Its epicenter was approximately 16 miles west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital.  The earthquake caused major damage in Port-au-Prince, Jacmel and other areas of the region.  Many notable landmark buildings were significantly damaged or destroyed, including the Presidential Palace, the National Assembly building and the Port-au-Prince Cathedral.  Some of these landmark buildings have yet to be rebuilt.  Physicians for...

UVA students in the Dominican Republic

We woke up this morning in Santo Domingo and met as a team over breakfast to discuss the day’s agenda. We were heading out for our first day at the Resource Mothers (RM) office, prepping for interviews and the introduction of a photo-voice project, intended to capture a day in the life of RM clients. Four years ago, 11-year-old Rudy collided with a family member who was carrying a pot of hot cooking oil. Rudy suffered traumatic burns on his face, neck and chest. His injuries twisted his muscles and mangled his skin.
