Burn Care

Helping Babies Breathe   Stories - Disability Care

Someone suffers a burn injury every five seconds in the developing world. Forty percent of these victims are kids. We empower local hospitals and clinics to provide rehabilitation and psychosocial support to burn victims. With your gifts, we mobilize materials (including compression garments, plaster and plastic) and provide hands-on training at burn units in Asia, Central America and South America.

Case Study

Benjamin Bloom Hospital (San Salvador, El Salvador)

Teach: Through a series of workshops, we trained Salvadoran physical and occupational therapists to create customized splints for burn patients. A critical step in the healing process, the splints help patients like Gilbert maintain proper alignment and reduce the risk of compromised mobility later in life.

Collaborate: Our work in El Salvador is part of a larger effort to enhance burn care capacity throughout the Americas. We play a lead role in facilitating the Caribbean and Central American Burn Consortium, a group that promotes the exchange of best practices among regional healthcare providers.

Sustain: By sourcing specialized material through Supporting Partners like AquaPlast, we helped the Bloom team address current patients’ needs and prepare for the care of future patients.

:: More children die each year from burn injuries than from tuberculosis or malaria::
