Last week, we had a team at the pediatric burn unit of Aproquen in Managua, Nicaragua. Gretchen Carrougher, a nurse from Seattle, and Dr. Lisa Tropez-Arceneaux, a psychologist from New Orleans, began working immediately after their arrival. 

Gretchen made a brief presentation on the progress made since her first visit to Nicaragua.  The nurses have made tremendous strides in wound care, assessment and management of pain and collaborating with other members of the team. Hello from the burn care team on location in San Jose Costa Rica. Today was our first day at the pediatric hospital. Dr Siri, the burn surgeon who is our host for this trip informed us that this hospital is the only pediatric specialty hospital in the entire country. In addition to being the only burn unit for the state, the hospital boasts the only tissue bank for the state that Dr. Siri helped start. He took us over to the tissue bank and explained the process.
