We got to the airport and checked in: 12 bags in all. We got through security and arrived at the gate, only to discover that Nicola could not find her passport and plane ticket. All is going well and we're having an extremely productive trip. I think the biggest lesson we've learned is that sometimes, diplomacy has to occur in person. As amazing as technology is, it's no substitute for building relationships.

On our third day in Quayaquil, we visited the Hospital Gineco-Obstetrico, a hospital for women and infants with a 350-bed capacity.
