When Samuel W. Hill retires from his post as the development director of major gifts at the end of March, it will be the end of an era for Physicians for Peace, an international nonprofit headquartered in Norfolk. For nearly two decades, Hill has served the group in myriad leadership roles, including executive director. We have openings for a volunteer surgeon to serve as a visiting faculty member in the Surgical Intern Training Project at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital/College of Medicine (QECH/COM) in Blantyre, Malawi. The surgeon will provide lectures and hands on training according to a general surgical curriculum. Both active and retired surgeons with current license and teaching experience are encouraged to apply. Physicians for Peace and QECH/COM will provide airfare, housing, support staff, and a car for use, as well as a small stipend to defray living expenses.

Longtime Physicians for Peace volunteer Dr. Fred Ward has a new project in the works: a medical and legal suspense novel.

Ward, an infectious disease clinician and professor in Richmond, Va., wrote Felony Dementia with his friend Adrian Eissler, a criminal lawyer in Austin, Texas. Through the novel, the two shed light on the tragedy of early-onset frontotemporal degeneration with an action-packed account of a young lawyer struggling through a government conspiracy to kill trials of a promising drug.
