It was a horrific car accident that left Nelson Rivas unable to walk or move his hands. He thought he was confined to a lifetime in a wheelchair. But when Physicians for Peace (PFP) visited Nelson in 2011, that all changed. He was selected for a complex spinal procedure that local Hampton Roads neurosurgeons, Dr. Jonathan Partington and Dr. David Waters, completed without complications. Leaving Nelson with specific physical therapy instructions, the PFP team told him they would be back next year.

Hello from the burn care team on location in San Jose Costa Rica. Today was our first day at the pediatric hospital. Dr Siri, the burn surgeon who is our host for this trip informed us that this hospital is the only pediatric specialty hospital in the entire country. In addition to being the only burn unit for the state, the hospital boasts the only tissue bank for the state that Dr. Siri helped start. He took us over to the tissue bank and explained the process.
