Our "Renewing Strength" project in Tanzania

Updated: Apr 4

Physicians for Peace (PFP) and the International Society for Burn Injuries (ISBI) invite you to champion our "Renewing Strength" project in Tanzania, addressing the crucial need for burn rehabilitation and scar management. This initiative is a response to the collaboration efforts between ISBI and PFP, aiming to make a lasting impact on the lives of burn survivors.

Gilbert M. Mrosso, physiotherapist at Bugando Medical Centre in Mwanza, Tanzania, is employing play therapy to enhance range of motion in a young patient with burn injuries. This intervention takes place within thenewly refurbished pediatric burn rehabilitation room at this hospital.

Problem

Without adequate rehabilitative care alongside surgical intervention, burn injuries result in contracted and painful scars, causing loss of range of motion and disability. Often, this leads to additional surgeries for repair. We are committed to breaking this cycle by providing comprehensive training to therapists, nurses, and surgeons. By emphasizing the ongoing management of burn scars, we can heal and prevent the need for further surgical interventions, significantly improving the patients' quality of life.

Our Solution

  • 12-month certification program covering key burn rehabilitation domains.

  • Focus on scar management to prevent pain, loss of motion, and disability.

  • Training therapists, nurses, and surgeons to understand the importance of ongoing scar management.

What you can do

Your support directly contributes to training professionals who will play a crucial role in lessening the burden of surgical care. By emphasizing the significance of ongoing scar management, we aim to heal and prevent further interventions, ultimately improving the quality of life for burn survivors in Tanzania.
