Written by Dr. Ichabod Mhone, Physicians for Peace Anesthesiology Scholar, Set to Graduate December 2025 (Malawi)

As I approach the final stages of my studies, I'm filled with a mix of excitement and anticipation. While I'm eager to complete my program, I'm also aware of the significant responsibilities that come with attaining an administrative position upon graduation. Despite these challenges, I'm confident in my abilities and feel well-prepared to take on new roles.

Over the past year, I've focused intensely on my exam preparation, and with only five months to go before the first part of my examinations, I'm working diligently to ensure my success. As one of the inaugural PFP scholars, I'm proud to represent my organization and the people of Malawi, and I'm committed to making a positive impact in my field.

Upon graduation, I plan to return to the northern region of Malawi, where I'll be the first anesthesiologist. My goal is to improve healthcare delivery and provide high-quality services to my community. I'm particularly passionate about pursuing regional anesthesia as a subspecialty, as it has the potential to revolutionize pain management and make surgical experiences more comfortable for patients.

One of the highlights of my year was being called upon to provide a paravertebral block for a patient who had undergone a radical mastectomy due to breast cancer. Using my regional anesthesia skills, I successfully administered the block, and the patient experienced minimal discomfort and required minimal additional analgesia. This experience not only showcased my skills but also reinforced my passion for regional anesthesia.

I'm grateful for the support and opportunities you have provided me and I'm committed to making a meaningful contribution to the healthcare sector in Malawi. I'm excited to share my knowledge and skills with others and to work towards improving healthcare outcomes in my community.

Yours truly,

Ichabod Mhone
